Mele a Hakuwale: To Sing and Improvise | June 23- July 2, 2018 with Rhiannon & Peter Eldridge

2018 BIG NEWS!!!

We are very excited to announce that Peter Eldridge will be joining Rhiannon for Mele a Hakuwale this summer!

This gathering is for 16-18 skillful improvisers with strong, committed vocal lives. It is a 10-day (9 nights) workshop on Leo Nani Farms, where professional singers, teachers and experienced improvisers who are busy in their musical lives, come together to develop their improvisational skills and connect with their musical heart. Our singing circles are a combination of improvisation, song form, technique study and intuitive development.  Each year the singers come from far-flung parts of the earth and are bonded by their lifetime devotion to music and desire to create community. We find that friendships and collaborations form in these days last a lifetime.

This year Peter will be offering what is called an ‘Eldridge Duos’ concert as part of the Mele a Hakuwale workshop.   Peter will work with each singer on an arrangement and he will accompany you for the performance on the farm. The music tends to be varied -  jazz tunes, singer/songwriter tunes,  Brazilian tunes, folks music, etc. Peter will bring a bunch of music with him, as possible collaborations, or perhaps you will have an idea yourself. If you would like to bring  a couple of tunes in your back pocket - bring it! - or you can work on something from Peter's collection.

How To Apply - Acceptance into this workshop is based on Rhiannon’s approval. If Rhiannon is familiar with your work, she may be able to admit you without the MP3 audition. If she is not familiar with your vocal work or it has been a long time we ask you to submit an MP3 audition.

ON PETER ELDRIDGE

Disappearing Day’—Eldridge’s fifth album to date—is an out-and-out masterpiece.... If ever there was a singular artist capable of showing us the singularity in ourselves, it’s Peter Eldridge.
ALL ABOUT JAZZ

A superb musical alchemist, Peter Eldridge synthesizes modern jazz with not only pop but also R&B and latin music. The results are varied and dynamic but also aesthetically focused, as Eldridge’s mellifluous baritone and urbane lyrics brim with pop accessibility.
JAZZ TIMES

a note from Rhiannon....For those of you who know Peter Eldridge, you understand his skill and unique gifts teaching technique, songwriting, arranging, and his partnership in New York Voices, vocal quartet extraordinaire. He’s an associate professor at Berklee College of Music. He is tearing it up over there. All this you can find in his bio.  If you haven’t heard of him, I want to say that not only is he a rare musical talent but his reputation is authentic as a solid, kind, funny human being. All that decided it for me. I want to work with him.

When I look for collaborators to bring to Hawaii Island, I am looking for someone who will appreciate the raw power and grace of nature. I want to be able to create music together, to laugh, be inspired, share time with singers so that both of us bring our best to this wonderful week together.

Mele a Hakuwale will be a stellar, transformative time this June.

Hawaii, Peter, me and the music.

Many thanks to Ruth Cunningham
 for these beautiful photos!

From Rhiannon

Mele is for all you beautiful singers working in the worlds of performance, teaching and healing busy with your lives. Come for ten days to Hawaii and recharge your creative and emotional batteries with improvisation in the intense joy of wild nature. Now more than ever we need the community of song.

I invite you to a vocal gathering on the Big Island of Hawaii.  We will use the Vocal River exercises as the basis for study of vocal improvisation as we invent new forms and collaborate on musical ideas. We will find the connections between performance and healing as we blend song form and sound, all the while feeling the magic this island has in abundance.

We will travel to special places nearby and around the Hilo side for swimming, lava walking, local cultural events, farmer’s markets, local crafts shopping and a day long trip to dancer Shizuno Nasu’s studio in Volcano to sing in the environment of Pele in all her power.

I believe you will find a profound sense of ohana (family) here that is important in this world of disconnect and isolation. Local folks and kapuna sometimes come by to share music and talk story with their knowledge of the traditions and history of these islands. Kumu Ryan McCormack will visit us for one day using his extensive knowledge of hula and Hawaiian music to help integrate us so we can appreciate being able to sing together in this unique environment.

It is a reminder that when we sing, the earth is always under our feet, and it matters that we acknowledge and honor where we are. That is why it is precious to come to Hawaii Island and sing for your life!

With the blessing of aloha,
Rhiannon
