Improvisation Practice for Singers and Teachers of Voice
A two day master class with Rhiannon
Friday and Saturday, April 18 & 19, 2008
10 AM - 5 PM
Beautiful, private Soho studio location
Tuition $275. Limited scholarships available.
In order to gather a group of singers at similar levels in their work, auditions may be requested.
Rhiannon will be back on the East Coast in April and would love to gather with you in the power and joy of improvisation. This is a return to the music circle for singers who have studied with Rhiannon previously - both strong working singers and voice teachers who use improvisation with their students. Having experienced Rhiannon's approach before will enable the group to jump right in to a rich, rewarding two days of creating improvised music together using her exercises and developing new forms together, while continuing to explore the realm of using your voice and intention for healing. Being in a circle of other committed singers and vocal teachers, all open to the lessons of improvisation, the work can go deep and strong. Learning to improvise as an ensemble with shared responsibility and power teaches deep listening, generosity, courage and musical awareness. There will be an emphasis on exercises that can become performance pieces.
Email sdconey@rhiannonmusic.com and tell us of your interest in attending. If you have not studied with Rhiannon many times, sending a photo of yourself (or a link to a website that has your photo) will be very helpful. Thank you.

Mele a Hakuwale--To Sing and Improvise
Rhiannon’s Advanced Improvisation Retreat
Ho’okena, Big Island of Hawai'i
November 16-23, 2008
Tuition: $2100
From Rhiannon:
I invite you to a vocal gathering on the Big Island of Hawaii, at the beach, on the tropical Kona coast, right around the corner from Ho’okena, a deep, clear bay where I have often swum with the spinner dolphins and have experienced a profound sense of coming home. To be able to gather there to sing is both a blessing and an awakening.
This retreat is for 12-14 singers with strong, committed, vocal lives and hearts open to improvisation. I use a selection process in order to create a compatible group. **
Hale Kai, a small private retreat center, will be our home for 7 days and nights. It is a blessed place of serenity and power. It has the feeling of a Balinese village in its simple decor and intimacy. Everywhere you look there is a sense of ancientness and grace.
We gather in the large open yoga room for our singing sessions, or on the lava coast right outside the gate, or at various other sacred places and pristine beaches where the music flows. We will study the mystery and techniques of vocal improvisation, using all kinds of music, from local Hawaiian chanting and songs, to your own invented and composed music, on out into the music of the world. We will find the connections between performance and healing as we blend song form and sound, all the while feeling the magic this island has in abundance.
Simple, healthy and delicious cuisine with fresh local fruit and fish will feed our bodies while we sing to feed our souls.
There is a beautiful sense of O'hana, family, here that is very important in this world of disconnect and isolation. Believe me, you will feel connected here. Local folks and kapuna sometimes come by to share music and talk story with their knowledge of the traditions and history of these islands. It is a reminder that when we sing, the earth is always under our feet, and it matters so much where that is.
That is why it is so precious to come to Hale Kai and sing for your life!
With the blessing of aloha,
Rhiannon
Selection Process
Acceptance into this workshop is based on Rhiannon’s approval. If she is very familiar with your vocal work from past study with her, she will be able to decide whether or not you are a good match for this particular gathering. If she is not familiar, she will ask you for a phone audition. You would be able to leave that audition on our office voice mail (details will be provided ).
Male singers are most welcome to participate in this retreat. However, the reality is that most of Rhiannon's students are women. We will only be able to accommodate men at this retreat if there are enough interested qualified men to share one or more of the huts and create some good balanced energy. May it be so!
Living Arrangements at Hale Kai
Hale Kai is like a tiny village - a unique cluster of wonderful spaces, each different and lovingly furnished. Most rooms house 2 or 3 people, and so communal living is a fact of life in this setting! The windows are screened, with no glass. The showers are mostly outdoors. Tropical critters are a fact of life. In other words, you've got to embrace the life style! Tuition includes 7 nights room, meals, ground transportation and teaching...essentially all expenses except your airfare to and from Kona.
Applying
This is a very informal process. Let us know if you are interested in attending. If you have studied with Rhiannon before, let us know when and where. If you already know that Rhiannon is not very familiar with you, feel free to tell us about your singing life, and to include a photo that might jog her memory of having worked with you. If you have never studied with Rhiannon, you are still most welcome to apply! We'll let you know whether an phone audition is requested, and how to go about that. Once you are accepted, a $700 deposit will be requested to hold your space. The tuition balance will be due September 10.
