All The Way In 2009
Rhiannon's Year Long Advanced Vocal Improvisation Course
May 8-14, August 16-22 and October 11-17
Dear Singers,
RhiannonMusic is excited to announce the second year of Rhiannon’s new mastery level program.
We invite you to join Rhiannon for All The Way In, a course taught as a series of three extended sessions between May and October that will be a deep dive into the treasure of vocal improvisation. Students will meet as a continuing group and be able to develop strong relationships with one another and Rhiannon, as well as having the assurance that each session will reach further into the skills and spirit of improvisation.
This course is for up to 16 advanced singers with a deep and daily commitment to their voices, musical lives and building community with song. Admission is by permission from Rhiannon. An audition may be requested of applicants.
Each of the three sessions is 7 days long. We will work for 5 to 6 hours each day. There will be guest teachers, collaborators and performances throughout the course.
Between sessions there will be assignments and periodic check-ins through conference calls and blogging.
Tuition for the course is $3000 for the three sessions, plus living expenses and travel to each location. A $1000 deposit will be due upon acceptance, with the balance due in summer of 2009.
The Sessions:
Session I, May 8 to 14, 2009
Light on the Hill Retreat Center, Van Etten, New York
Vocal River Exercises--Skill and Spirit
Our focus will be exercises that have been developed by Rhiannon over the 33 years of her teaching. These include: Crossing the Circle, Three Face Front, Orchestra, Band, Shape Shifting, Jump Shift, Rain, Home, Circle Singing and Cards among others. Rhiannon will explain the process of each exercise, we will work with them in various configurations, receive and give feedback and examine the influence of these exercises on the rest of our singing lives.
Session II, August 16 to 22, 2009
Point Reyes, California
Sound Healing, Community and Walking Song--Giving Back
Our focus will be on our connection to the power of sound. We will sing the possibilities of improvisational sound healing by working on one another and then if appropriate we will extend out to the community. We will continue using the Vocal River exercises to deepen our understanding of the value of this work in many contexts. We will also work in a form called Walking Song which involves being in nature and learning to sing the songs that we find there which can serve to be in relationship to nature and open a healing process for those of us singing.
Session III, October 11 to 17, 2009
Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Collaboration and Performance--Sharing
We will give our focus to rehearsal and performance with one another and with local artists. Singers, instrumentalists, dancers, actors, art and photographs will all be possible collaborative partners as we study how to enter this realm of sharing creative space and realize the potential for staying in that authentic, ceremonial, poetic time while working in new situations with an audience and/or partners. The goal is to develop alliances and projects that could continue after these sessions.

Mele a Hakuwale--To Sing and Improvise
Rhiannon’s Advanced Improvisation Retreat
Hale Kai (beautiful, private retreat center)
Ho’okena, Big Island of Hawai'i
January 9-16, 2010
Tuition: $2100
This gathering is for 12 skillful improvisors with strong, committed vocal lives. It is Rhiannon’s most advanced yearly retreat, second only to All the Way In. Acceptance into this workshop is based on Rhiannon’s approval. If Rhiannon is very familiar with your vocal work from past study with her, she may be able to admit you based on that. If she is not familiar with your vocal work or it has been a long time, she will ask you for a phone audition. Details will be provided. We also welcome you to email a photo to help Rhiannon remember you, as well as a link to your music, if you have any on line.
From Rhiannon:
I invite you to a vocal gathering on the Big Island of Hawaii, at the beach, on the tropical Kona coast, right around the corner from Ho’okena, a deep, clear bay where I have often swum with the spinner dolphins.
Hale Kai will be our home for 7 days and nights. It is a blessed place of serenity and power. It has the feeling of a Balinese village in its simple decor and intimacy. Everywhere you look there is a sense of ancientness and grace.
We gather in the large open yoga room for our singing sessions, or on the lava coast right outside the gate, or at various other sacred places and pristine beaches where the music flows. We will study the mystery and techniques of vocal improvisation, using all kinds of music, from local Hawaiian chanting and songs, to your own invented and composed music, on out into the music of the world. We will find the connections between performance and healing as we blend song form and sound, all the while feeling the magic this island has in abundance.
Simple mostly-vegetarian cuisine with fresh local fruit and fish will feed our bodies while we sing to feed our souls.
There is a profound sense of O'hana (family) here that is very important in this world of disconnect and isolation. Believe me, you will feel connected here. Local folks and kapuna sometimes come by to share music and talk story with their knowledge of the traditions and history of these islands. It is a reminder that when we sing, the earth is always under our feet, and it matters so much where that is.
That is why it is so precious to come to Hale Kai and sing for your life!
With the blessing of aloha,
Rhiannon
Living Arrangements at Hale Kai:
Hale Kai is like a tiny village in an old Hawaiian neighborhood - a unique cluster of wonderful spaces, each different and lovingly furnished. It is off the grid and solar-powered. Most rooms house 2 or 3 people, and so communal living is a fact of life in this setting. Tuition includes 7 nights room and meals, plus ground transportation and teaching...essentially all expenses except your airfare to and from Kona.
Finances:
Upon acceptance a $700 deposit is requested.
